Mera Peak Climbing Weather and Temperature Guide. Mera Peak, standing at 6,476 meters (21,246 feet), is Nepal’s highest trekking peak and a popular objective for climbers. The weather in the Mera Peak region is highly seasonal and a crucial factor for a successful and safe ascent.
The best times to climb Mera Peak are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These periods offer stable weather, clear skies, and favorable climbing conditions.
January
- Weather: This is the coldest month of the year, with extreme cold and dry conditions. While skies can be clear, there is a high risk of heavy snowfall and strong winds, which can lead to blizzards and whiteout conditions.
- Temperature: At higher altitudes, temperatures can drop to -20°C to -25°C (-4°F to -13°F) or lower. Even during the day, temperatures remain well below freezing.
- Conditions: The trails and mountain are covered in deep snow and ice, making the climb technically challenging and dangerous for all but the most experienced and well-equipped winter mountaineers.
February
- Weather: Similar to January, February is still very cold, but the days begin to get slightly longer and clearer toward the end of the month. Heavy snow is still a significant possibility.
- Temperature: Temperatures remain frigid, with nighttime temperatures at the summit often dropping to -20°C (-4°F).
- Conditions: The mountain remains covered in snow and ice. The cold and icy conditions require proper gear and experience. Early February is still deep winter, but late February can be a more viable, albeit still challenging, option.
March
- Weather: This month marks the start of the spring climbing season. The weather becomes more stable with increasingly clear skies and minimal precipitation. However, the first few weeks can still be very cold from the lingering winter.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures at lower altitudes can range from 0°C to 15°C (32°F to 59°F), while at higher altitudes and at night, temperatures can fall to -10°C to -15°C (14°F to 5°F).
- Conditions: Snow accumulation from winter may still be present at higher elevations, but the trails are generally in good condition. This is a popular and excellent month for climbing.
April
- Weather: This is considered a peak month for climbing Mera Peak. The weather is typically very stable, with consistently clear, sunny days.
- Temperature: Temperatures are pleasant during the day, ranging from 1°C to 12°C (34°F to 54°F), with cooler but manageable nights.
- Conditions: The trails are dry, and visibility is excellent, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. The landscapes are lush with blooming rhododendrons. This is an ideal month for a climb.
May
- Weather: The last month of the spring season. The weather remains stable and warm, but there is an increasing chance of pre-monsoon showers and cloud cover, especially later in the month.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures at lower altitudes are around 0°C to 15°C (32°F to 59°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing at higher elevations.
- Conditions: The mountain is in good condition for climbing, but climbers should be prepared for some occasional rain. The increasing cloud cover might slightly obscure mountain views.
June
- Weather: The monsoon season begins. This period is characterized by frequent rainfall, high humidity, and thick cloud cover.
- Temperature: Lower altitudes are warmer, but nights are still cold. Temperatures in the trekking valleys can reach up to 20°C (68°F), while at higher elevations, temperatures can range from 7°C to -10°C (45°F to 14°F).
- Conditions: The trails become muddy and slippery, and the risk of landslides increases. Visibility is poor, and mountain views are often hidden. This is generally considered an off-season for climbing.
July
- Weather: This is the peak of the monsoon season, with the highest amount of rainfall. Expect frequent and heavy downpours.
- Temperature: Similar to June, with warm and humid conditions at lower altitudes and cold temperatures at higher elevations.
- Conditions: The trails are at their worst. Climbing during this month is highly risky due to poor trail conditions, bad visibility, and the possibility of avalanches at higher altitudes.
August
- Weather: The monsoon season is still active, but the rainfall starts to decrease towards the end of the month.
- Temperature: Temperatures are similar to June and July, with warm days at lower altitudes and cold nights at higher elevations.
- Conditions: Trails are still very wet and muddy, but the tapering off of the monsoon rains at the end of August signals the start of the autumn season.
September
- Weather: The monsoon season ends, and the autumn climbing season begins. Early September may still have some light rain, but the weather quickly becomes stable and dry.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Nighttime temperatures at higher altitudes can drop to -5°C to -10°C (23°F to 14°F).
